History of Faith Church

Faith Moravian Church was established as a congregation on May 26, 1985. Over twenty years ago, Sis. Maxine Garrett, saw the need for a Moravian congregation in the Washington, D.C. area, and after initial contacts, brought together a group of people coming from many different islands and within the United States, meeting with one common bond of the Moravian heritage.

Her vision for this congregation further developed with an early Christmas Love Feast celebration held on December 11, 1982. This service took place at St. Stephen¡¯s Episcopal Church in Northwest Washington, with Rev. Dr. George L. Lloyd (deceased) then pastor of United Moravian Church of New York, acting as celebrant. In order for this service to take place, we were pleased to have the cooperation of Rev. Dr. Gordon L. Sommers, then President of the Eastern District Board; Bro. Ted Wilde; Rev. Robert E. Sawyer, then pastor of St. Paul¡¯s Moravian Church; the congregation; participants from Trinity Moravian Church of New Carrollton; and many other persons who, if not members, are still considered to be Friends of Faith. The service was a success, and that led to everyone wanting to continue this new found fellowship.

A committee of the Rev. Ted Wilde, Robert Sawyer, Hazel Blandford, Douglas and Margaret Robertson, Marco and Dorothy Zamora, Donald Morant, and Maxine Garrett was formed to organize the Fellowship. Donald Morant was elected Chairman; Douglas Robertson, Vice Chairman; Margaret Robertson, Treasurer; and Dorothy Zamora, Secretary.

The steering committee decided that services would be held once per month, at 4:00pm at St. Stephen¡¯s Episcopal. Bro. Glen Harke agreed to be the organist. After a few months of meetings, scheduling became a problem, and changes had to be made.

As a result of interest shown at these services, permission was given to formulate a fellowship, and thus the Washington Fellowship was born. It met in homes and various other places, but marks as an important date in the Fellowship¡¯s life, its first Palm Sunday/Easter Service, held during a terrible ice storm on February 16, 1983, at the All Soul¡¯s Church on 16th Street, N.W. with the Rev. Steadman A. Bent, then pastor of New York First Church as celebrant.
